Following the storm of the century that came through the Smith Mountain Lake area on Friday evening June 29th, the Smith Mountain Lake Fire/Rescue Department had another busy week-end with a total of six calls.

On Friday, June 27th, rescue units were dispatched to a report of a missing child in the Penhook community of Franklin county. Game Wardens, Franklin County Rescue units, Franklin county Sheriffs department, State Police and Fireboats responded.

On Monday, June 25th at approximately 6:00am a call came into Franklin County dispatch for a reported dock fire at R61 on the Roanoke river.Fireboats and Hardy Fire were dispatched. Fireboats 11-8, 6 and 5 responded.

They say that calls come in sets of three, Well, Father's Day started out with a navigational hazard handled by Fireboat 11-5, then a reported boat fire came in around channel marker C-6. Which was handled by Fireboat 11-2 and 11-6, no fire was found just an overheated engine.

On Saturday, June 16th around 12:00 hours a gentlemen was found floating in the water in a cove within Betty's Creek. Franklin County Med 15 along with Scruggs Rescue responded with Fireboat 11-6 and 11-8.

So far we have had a safe Memorial day week-end. One reported boat fire, one assist to Cool Branch Rescue, one assist to Cool Branch Fire on a dumster fire and one assist to a boater who lost his engine.

On Sunday, May 20th, at approximately 20:40 hours, fireboats were dispatched to there fifth call of the day. Fireboat 11-5 was dispatched along with Franklin Company 10 for a smoke investigation in the area of G-10 in the Gills Creek subdivision.

While on stand-by in quarters, Fireboat 11-5 was dispatched to a fire alarm at Palmer's Marina in the Bull Run part of the lake. Upon arrival, Chief Tawes assumed command . Cool Branch Fire Deprtment from Pittslvania county arrived and assisted in the investigation.

During the boating accident investigation, fireboat came upon a jet ski that had a malfuction and was taking on water. Deputy Chief Al Busch and his crew removed the two ccupants and assisted them in getting their jet ski to the state ramp behind Waterwheel marina .
