Man saved by SML Marine Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department

Laker Weekly  Jul 25, 2017

The Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department assisted a man who was severely injured after falling from his boat and into water on July 12.

John LaTorre, 42, fell from a water slide on a houseboat onto a railing below while out on the water with his wife and friends, said Ray Talley, SML Marine Volunteer Fire/Rescue deputy chief. The department responded to a 911 call from the boat that was near channel marker R3.

Talley said that LaTorre had multiple injuries to his back and ribs when they arrived on the scene.

“We put him on a backboard and transported him from the scene,” Talley said.

LaTorre was transported by the department to the Cool Branch Rescue Squad that was waiting at Anthony Ford Public Boat Launch. Talley said EMS on site assisted LaTorre until Life-Guard 10 arrived and transported him to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Talley credited the department for its fast response time to the incident. He said three of the department’s fireboats responded and were able to assist in getting LaTorre to safety.

“We had some good, qualified people,” Talley said of the department members who took part in the response
