Bedford Regional Water Authority issues water shortage alert

By Tim Saunders | Posted: Wed 4:19 PM, Jan 03, 2018

BEDFORD, Va. (WDBJ7) Some customers of the Bedford Regional Water Authority are being asked to conserve water, due to low levels at Smith Mountain Lake.

The authority sent out a "water shortage alert" Wednesday afternoon, advising customers in the town of Bedford and around Smith Mountain Lake to curb "non-essential uses of water" now that the water level at Smith Mountain Lake has dipped below 791.5 feet.

The water authority began pulling some of its water supply from Smith Mountain Lake, following the construction of a new treatment facility and water line in 2016.

The water authority is asking customers to avoid filling fountains and pools, outdoor watering, and washing motor vehicles. Restaurants have also been asked to only serve water if requested by their customers.

The water authority said its water shortage measures will be removed once the level at Smith Mountain Lake rises above 791.5 feet.
